Report of the committee for revamping scholarship schemes
The greatest asset that an individual can procure is his/her education. No doubt, investment in education is investment in human capital.
However, today education has become expensive and well beyond the reach of the common man. It is truly unfortunate that many a brilliant student is unable to reap the benefits of education because of financial constraints.
As poignantly portrayed by Thomas Gray, in his poem ‘Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard’
“Full many a gem of purest ray serene,The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear:Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,And waste its sweetness on the desert air.”
Economic barriers to higher education can be addressed by ensuring financial viability for all students wanting to enter the world of higher education. A more efficient scholarship administration will definitely provide the necessary fillip for our blooming talents so that the sweetness and fragrance of the poor as well as the deserving students would not go fallow.
Today, scholarships have become an integral part of higher education. The National Knowledge Commission has underlined the importance of scholarships in its report:
“Education is the fundamental mechanism for social inclusion through the creation of more opportunities. It is therefore essential to ensure that no student is denied the opportunity to participate in higher education due to financial constraints.”
